Founded in 1921 on Hamilton Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Steele Canvas Basket first made its mark supplying specialty canvas products to the coal and textile industries of New England. Their commitment to craftsmanship quickly earned them a reputation for reliability, leading industries across the country to seek out Steele’s rugged and dependable goods.
Fast forward over 100 years, and Steele Canvas remains true to its roots. Their manufacturing processes have stood the test of time, continuing to produce high-quality, American-made home wares built to last. The company is now led by second-generation owners, John and Paul Lordan, who have taken their father’s passion and transformed it into a mission—preserving American craftsmanship for future generations.
The History
Steele quickly became known for its durable, American-made canvas products. As demand grew, the company expanded to a larger facility on Concord Turnpike, allowing for increased production and new product lines, including their first residential gift guide featuring sling chairs, log carriers, and tote bags. Over the years, Steele gained national recognition, from demonstrating their basket durability to the Postmaster General at an industrial trade show in Washington, D.C., to being featured in Martha Stewart Living, which boosted demand for their home laundry and storage solutions. The company continued to evolve, launching the popular Steeletex vinyl beach totes and expanding their tote bag offerings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Steele pivoted production to manufacture and donate over 40,000 cloth masks to frontline workers. Their influence even reached Major League Baseball, with the Boston Red Sox incorporating a Steele truck into their home run celebrations during the 2021-2022 season. Today, Steele continues to expand, most recently moving its operations to a new manufacturing facility in Wilmington, MA, ensuring that their legacy of quality and durability lives on.
