Building a Tradition in Wickenburg

"With a strong roping presence the stock contractor for Legends of the West, is the same one who puts on the Gold Rush Days Rodeo for the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce," Sheila explained. "At the time, I was connected with the Chamber, and we ended up meeting in Vegas during the NFR. We started talking about the rodeo scene in Wickenburg and realized—it was time for the town to have its own professional rodeo. We shook hands, took a chance, and just four months later, we delivered the inaugural event."

Legends of the West isn’t just another rodeo—it’s an opportunity to expand the town’s event offerings and showcase the Western way of life to an even larger audience.

Wickenburg Legends of the West Rodeo: A Celebration of History & Heritage

Wickenburg, Arizona, is a town deeply rooted in Western history. Long before the Gold Rush, the Hassayampa River was a fertile land for the Yavapai people and a prime trapping ground for early frontiersmen. Officially incorporated in 1863 after Henry Wickenburg struck gold at Vulture Mine, the town quickly grew into one of Arizona’s largest settlements, narrowly missing the title of state capital by just two votes.

Today, Wickenburg is known for its rich heritage, unwavering hospitality, and dedication to preserving its Western roots. The Legends of the West Rodeo embodies this spirit, bringing together top-tier rodeo competition with a celebration of the town’s storied past. A visit to Wickenburg isn’t just about experiencing great rodeo action—it’s a step back in time to the heart of the Old West.

A True Rodeo Experience

The event features all eight PRCA rodeo events, bringing together top cowboys and cowgirls to compete in classic disciplines. And because Wickenburg is known as the Team Roping Capital of the World, it was only fitting to highlight Breakaway Roping as well—giving women a greater presence in the sport.

The weekend also includes specialty acts like Brian Bausch, The Misfit Cowboy, and thrilling performances from Arizona Mounted Shooters, making it an action-packed event for the whole family.

"It's not just about the contestants," Sheila emphasized. "There’s a whole side of the rodeo world that many people don’t see—the dedication, the behind-the-scenes work, the relationships. We want to share that, so people can experience more than just the adrenaline rush of competition."

Rodeo not only brings together competitors and fans, it brings business and prosperity to the town as well.

  • Friday (April 5) – Open Rodeo
A team roping event, capped at 100 teams, giving ropers an extra chance to compete for a $20,000 purse.

Friday Night – Wickenburg WestFestA free community event in historic downtown Wickenburg, featuring live music, vendors, and more. The Legends of the West team will have a presence there, further connecting with the community.

More Than Just a Rodeo

Legends of the West isn’t just about showcasing talent—it’s about creating an unforgettable experience. The event includes vendor booths, featuring everything from handcrafted jewelry to Western gear, along with food and drink vendors to keep the crowd fueled.

Gates open at 1:00 PM, giving guests plenty of time to explore before the main rodeo performance kicks off at 3:00 PM. And unlike many rodeo arenas, Wickenburg’s Ever Bowman Rodeo Grounds offers a breathtaking high-desert setting with the Bradshaw Mountains as the backdrop, creating a one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

Don't miss it!

Riding for a Cause

Legends of the West is also dedicated to giving back to the local community. This year, they’ve partnered with Wickenburg Community Hospital’s Pink Ribbon Angels, an organization that helps uninsured or underinsured individuals access breast cancer screenings and preventive care.

Through this partnership, Wrangler has stepped up to match donations up to $1,500, meaning that for every online ticket sold on Saturday, a portion of proceeds will go directly to the Wickenburg Breast Cancer Network, ensuring more people get the care they need.

Rodeo is a celebration of Western heritage, grit, and athleticism. Whether you're watching your first rodeo or becoming a lifelong fan, understanding the events and traditions will make the experience even more enjoyable. So grab your western apparel, find a seat in the stands, and get ready to cheer on the best cowboys and cowgirls in the sport!
